A Handy Guide on Choosing Workout Playlist

  • Category: Music

Music can do things to your body. When you listen to music that you like, the brain will release a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is important because it positively improves your mood. If the music is fast, it can increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. Aside from positively improving the mood, music can also boost exercise.

If you want to boost your performance, it is time to consider a workout playlist. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as setting your iPhone to shuffle and then play. You will be surprised because there is a systematic method to create a workout playlist. Here’s a guide on choosing a systematic workout playlist:

Synchronise the music with what you are doing

Music can improve your efficiency if you synchronize it with what exercise you are doing. For example, if you are running, you need to determine your stride rate first before you start choosing your music. This sounds complicated but actually, you just need to count your steps per minute while running at a comfortable pace. After identifying the stride rate (the average steps per minute), you need to find music with a similar number of BPM (Beats Per Minute).

If you do not know the BPM of the music, there are many sites that can assist you with this. If this sounds a lot of work, you can still have that boost even if you do not consider syncing the music with your moves.

Choose an energising rhythm

You can opt for energising rhythms – music that possesses 120 to 145 BPM. It is crucial that you do not overdo it. You have to know that faster tempos do not improve motivation or performance. It is always better to find that comfortable pace.

Select music with intensity in mind

When you select for a workout playlist, you need to structure it in a way that it will follow your expected intensity. This means that the music should slowly build up. You do not start and end your workout playlist with a high tempo, right? You start slow (warm-up) then gradually build up before finally fading (cooldown). You arrange it with intensity in mind and in accordance with the changes in your heart rate.

Find a music that you have a positive association with

Finally, do not just choose anything as long as it meets your BPM rhythm. You need to find a music that you have a positive association with so you will be exhilarated. Do not forget to stay tuned with your body and the environment.

If you are the type that loves music, compiling a workout playlist can indeed do you wonders. You will notice that when you listen to music while working out, the exercise seems easier. The interesting thing is that music can help moderate exercises work harder. What are you waiting for? Consider
